Composite bonding is an effective way to aesthetically restore your smile. Composite bonding materials are used to replace old unattractive fillings, change the color of your teeth, or reshape and recontour a less than ideal smile. Composite bonded resin is a tooth-colored plastic mixture filled with glass (silicon dioxide). Composite bonded fillings are tooth colored and are bonded to your tooth which has been found to be less sensitive over time than silver mercury containing fillings.

Question. How is a composite placed?
Answer. Following preparation, Dr.Kerbel places the composite filling in layers, using a light specialized to harden each layer. After the composite filling hardens, he then shapes the tooth colored restoration to blend in with the natural teeth. After the bite is correct, the composite bonded filling is then polished to prevent staining and early wear.
Question. How long does it take to place a composite?
Answer. Placing a composite restoration takes about 10-20 minutes longer than a silver filling. Placement time depends on the size and location of the cavity-in general, the larger the size, the longer it will take.
Question. What are the advantages of composites?
Answer. Esthetics are the main advantage, since the composite shades can be blended to create a color nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. Composite fillings bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage and insulates the tooth from excessive temperature changes.
